The Hinds County School District (HCSD) is proud to unveil its official 2026–2027 Academic Calendar, a forward-thinking plan designed to elevate student achievement while prioritizing the well-being of students, staff, and families.

This year’s calendar introduces an innovative and intentional addition: Wellness Days, a strategic approach to supporting the whole child and ensuring students are equipped to succeed both academically and personally.

A Balanced Approach to Excellence

The upcoming school year will begin for students on July 30, 2026, and conclude on May 27, 2027 (60% day). The academic calendar remains structured into four nine-week instructional periods to ensure consistent monitoring of student progress and strong instructional outcomes:

First Nine Weeks: July 30, 2026 – October 2, 2026 (45 Days)

Second Nine Weeks: October 12, 2026 – December 18, 2026 (45 Days)

Third Nine Weeks: January 5, 2027 – March 19, 2027 (45 Days)

Fourth Nine Weeks: March 22, 2027 – May 27, 2027 (45 Days)

District Benchmark & Nine Weeks Test Schedule

To support progress monitoring and instructional alignment, District Benchmark/Nine Weeks Test Days are scheduled as follows:

September 28 – October 2, 2026

December 14 – 18, 2026

March 1 – 5, 2027

May 19 – 25, 2027

These assessments provide valuable data to guide instruction, support student growth, and ensure readiness for state assessments.

Introducing Wellness Days: A Commitment to the Whole Child

A defining feature of the 2026–2027 calendar is the introduction of Wellness Days, intentional pauses built into the academic year to help students reset, recharge, and return ready to perform at their best.

2026–2027 Wellness Day Schedule:

September 4, 2026

January 15, 2027

February 12, 2027

April 16 & April 19, 2027

Important: Wellness Days may also be used as inclement weather make-up days if needed.

Why Wellness Days Matter

At HCSD, we believe that excellence is not achieved by working harder alone, but by working healthier and smarter.

Across the nation, schools are seeing increased levels of test anxiety and academic burnout, especially during high-stakes testing periods and long stretches of continuous instruction.

Wellness Days are designed to:

·      Reduce Test Anxiety - Strategic breaks help students reset before and after important assessments, allowing them to perform at their true academic level.

·      Prevent Burnout - Continuous academic pressure can lead to fatigue, disengagement, and behavior challenges. These breaks help students stay motivated and energized.

·      Improve Focus and Retention - Students return more engaged, attentive, and ready to learn.

·      Support Mental and Emotional Health - Time to recharge builds confidence, resilience, and positive behavior.

·      Strengthen Family Connections - Provides families with intentional time together throughout the school year.
