Raymond, Miss. – Raymond High School junior Alicia Coleman has been named to the Mississippi Department of Education’s 2025–2026 State Superintendent Student Advisory Council (SAC), a group of student leaders who will provide input on education policy and student experiences across the state.
Coleman was chosen after completing a competitive application process that included an essay explaining why she wanted to serve on the council and what changes or improvements she would like to see in her district. She said the process began with simply deciding to apply and sharing her perspective through writing.
“I’m very excited for this opportunity,” Coleman said. “This is a chance for students like me to be heard and to work toward positive change in our schools.”
Her motivation to serve extends beyond academics. After losing her older brother in 2023, Coleman said she is determined to honor his memory by using her voice to make a difference for others.
The Student Advisory Council will hold its first in-person meeting on October 14 in Jackson, marking the start of the group’s work for the school year. Throughout their term, members will have opportunities to share their perspectives and provide input to State Superintendent Dr. Lance Evans on educational opportunities and policy in Mississippi.
Mrs. Tequia Willis, Assistant Director of the Hinds County Career and Technical Center, praised Coleman’s selection and recalled encouraging her to apply. “Alicia is a thoughtful, determined young woman who has the courage to use her voice for good,” Brown-Willis said. “I knew she would be a strong candidate, and I am so proud to see her representing Hinds County students at the state level.”
Coleman’s participation will ensure that the voices of Raymond High and Hinds County students are part of conversations shaping education across Mississippi.
